Here are some ideas that have been discussed for 4th of July activities. Don't know if I can make the call tonight, so sharing the words on message board and email......
It's time for young adults to STEP UP. Just coming home is not enough. You must contribute and show your support.
Short-terms ideas for 2009. 1. What is the liaison for HG Homecoming club to get "young folks" involved? Remember HGHC is the group who started the "4th of July" celebration and we must involve them. The HGHC puts on the activities (parade and dance). Some past HG graduates are discussing a campaign of AT LEAST 50 people (ages 18-45), call the group "HGHC young professionals" and commit to paying HGHC dues to help the club support activities. If everyone commit to paying dues of $50, then $50 x 50 = $2500 = money talks = make a "small" difference for 2009. Even if you are over 45, then you still can pay your dues and participate. This way, people can help HGHC purchase materials and supplies to help make facilities more accommodating and enjoyable for ALL. And, it's a growing effort. The goal is to eventually raise enough money from dues to help support a rebuild effort for the HGS grounds. Contact Emma Hampton for more information if you are interested. NO COMMITMENTS!!!!!!
2. Is there still a 4th of July king and queen contest? It used to be a really big thing, but now, it tends to only be Holly Grove participants. This was a great activity and lots of fun in years past.We need to get out-of-towners more involved with that. This way, folks can get together and raise money in support of HG efforts by supporting your king and queen from your city/town. You MUST get involved.SUPPORT ACTIVITIES!!! Not sure who is involved with this, but I'm sure Ms. JoAnne Hayden could tell you how to contact HGHC members in your area.
3.If that is not possible, some folks have proposed the idea of a small "Greek show" for the kids to enjoy. There are lots of Greeks from HG and many think it's a great idea and would love to get involved. Contact Letreese Hampton if you are interested. NO COMMITMENTS!!!!!!
If the Greek show is a great idea, then maybe we can have an "informational" so the kids can hear about college and jobs from folks who are either attending school or working and can share their success ideas. There are a lot of folks from HG who have really good careers and make lots of money - doctors, salesmen, lawyers, nurses, truck drivers - you name it!!! This way, they can share your experience, give back and show the kids "anything is possible when youre from HG". We have to find a way to work with the next generation and change them. Don't know if the kids would participate, but make it enticing (maybe part of the Greek show). Contact Fralana Latham if interested.NO COMMITMENTS!!!!!!
The final idea being discussed is working with the HGHC to see if we can have the dance in the old High School or Gym vs. the homecoming club. Possibilities are the classroom can serves as the reunion class "VIP rooms" and be rented for a fee, and the rest of the party can be in the halls. Just charge to come in the door. The goal is to make sure there is facility that can accommodate the # of folks who likes to attend the dance (young and old). Without the dance the 4th of July is NO FUN! And remember, this is how the HGHC makes money. You can show support and have a lot of fun and hopefully have accommodating facilities. Folks are planning to contact the HGHC and Rev. Tyler to discuss the idea. NO COMMITMENTS!!!!!!
Please feel free to contact me and share any information/ideas you may have. These were short term IDEAS discussed among a few people. THERE ARE NO COMMITMENTS AND THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO PLANS. If you are interested, please contact the names mentioned. I'm sure with enough volunteers and participation, this 4th of July (and 2010) will be a lot of fun!!!!
